Avoid Common Mistakes When Booking Inflatable Hire
Every Spring, without fail, we see the same trend at SJ’s Leisure. As enquiries begin to soar for garden parties, birthdays, school events, and family celebrations, we also notice an increase in one common question:
“Can you reduce the price?”
We completely understand why people ask. In today’s climate, every penny counts. Prices are rising everywhere and naturally, everyone wants the best value for their money. But when it comes to inflatable hire and leisure equipment, value and price are not the same thing — and that’s becoming more obvious than ever.
As the old saying goes: you get what you pay for. And recently, we’ve seen just how true that is.
The Real Cost of the “Cheapest” Option
Over the Easter holidays, we received multiple calls from customers who had booked with other companies in an attempt to find the best deal. Unfortunately, they were let down by poor service and substandard equipment — problems that were entirely avoidable.
Case Study: A £14 Difference With a Big Impact
One customer contacted us after being disappointed with the bouncy castle and slide combo they’d received from another supplier.
When we arrived to deliver our equipment, we could see immediately:
-
Heavy wear across the inflatable
-
Large areas of delamination
-
Splitting seams
-
A badly worn step and slide slip sheet
-
A very large patch inside the bouncing area
-
A design at least 10 years old, in a condition we would classify as scrap
Worse still:
All of this for a “saving” of just £14 compared to hiring one of our modern, clean, safe inflatables.
The customer was understandably upset. Once they saw our equipment, they immediately requested a refund from the original provider and we were delighted to step in. We’ve since taken another booking from the same address.

When Cheap Becomes Costly: No-Shows & Poor Equipment
We also received calls from customers whose original companies:
Others did receive equipment, but it arrived torn, badly worn, or completely different from what they expected.
These situations are stressful, disappointing, and entirely avoidable when using a reputable provider.

Don’t Be Fooled by “Cheap & Popular” Recommendations
We regularly see companies recommended on Facebook purely for their low prices. The prices may look appealing at first, but when you take a closer look, the reality can be worrying:
We strongly recommend that customers do their research before booking:
At SJ’s Leisure, our reputation comes from years of consistent service. We supply equipment to many schools across the North West every year, as well as some major international companies, and these clients return to us annually because they trust the quality of our equipment, the safety of our setups, and the professionalism of our service.
Doing your homework before booking ensures that your event is not only fun, but safe — and avoids the stress of last-minute issues or disappointing equipment.

What Does It Actually Cost to Hire a Quality Bouncy Castle? A Realistic Breakdown
There’s a misconception that a bouncy castle hire should cost £40–£50. On the surface, that seems reasonable — but once you understand the real, everyday costs involved in operating a professional hire company in 2026, it becomes clear why reputable companies cannot sustainably operate at extremely low prices.
It’s also important to note:
Not every inflatable costs the same. Prices vary depending on:
-
Product size and design
-
Travel distance
-
Staffing requirements
-
Setup complexity
-
Time of year
-
Duration of hire
-
Business operating costs
But to help customers understand what goes into even the most basic hire, here’s a transparent cost breakdown.
1. Labour Costs (Based on 2026 UK National Living Wage)
From April 2026, the National Living Wage for age 21+ is £12.71 per hour.
A standard hire includes:
Total time: roughly 80 minutes (1.33 hours).
At minimum wage:
1.33 hrs × £12.71 = £16.90 per staff member
Most professional deliveries realistically require two staff for safe handling, lifting, anchoring and customer care.
So:
£16.90 × 2 = £33.80 in labour alone
(And this excludes employer NI, pension contributions, holiday pay and other employment costs.)
2. Fuel Costs
Diesel currently sits around 180.9p per litre.
A typical round trip uses £8–£12 in fuel.
Fuel allocation used: £10
3. Vehicle Costs
Running a commercial van includes:
-
Insurance
-
Road tax
-
MOT
-
Repairs
-
Tyres and brakes
-
Depreciation
Spread across the year, this works out to about:
£4 per hire
4. Storage & Premises
Inflatables need a dry, secure unit. These come with:
-
Rent
-
Rates
-
Electricity
-
Insurance
Spread across hires:
£2–£3 per unit
(We use £2.50.)
5. Maintenance & Safety Testing
This includes:
-
Annual testing
-
PAT testing
-
Repair work
-
Cleaning and drying
-
General upkeep
Spread across the year:
£2–£3 per hire
(We use £2.50.)
6. Insurance
We carry £5 million public liability insurance, which must be spread across all hire revenue.
Insurance allocation: £2
7. Marketing, Admin & Booking Systems
Professional hire businesses also pay for:
Spread across hires:
£2–£3 per hire
(We use £2.50.)
Total Industry Operating Cost (Before VAT)
A typical standard hire includes the following costs:
- Labour (2026 NLW, 2 staff) – £33.80
- Fuel – £10.00
- Vehicle costs – £4.00
- Storage & premises – £2.50
- Maintenance & safety testing – £2.50
- Insurance – £2.00
- Marketing & admin – £2.50
Total operating cost (pre-VAT): approximately £57.30
Adding a sustainable profit margin (~25%) brings it to around £71.63, and with 20% VAT included, this totals approximately £85.96.
⭐ What This Means
Across the UK hire industry, an average price of £90+ for a standard inflatable is realistic and sustainable.
This doesn’t mean every inflatable costs this amount — some are larger, require more staff, or are booked for peak dates. Some cost less depending on travel distance or hire duration.
At SJ’s Leisure, our prices start from around £84, and reflect the level of equipment, service, safety, and professionalism that our customers expect. All our hires include outdoor-safe extension leads, mats, and proper anchorage — everything you need for a safe, fun event.
Why Extremely Low Prices Should Raise Red Flags
When you see companies offering bouncy castles for £50–£60, it may look like a bargain — but in reality, it’s almost impossible to cover legitimate costs at that price. As we’ve shown in the breakdown above, a standard hire realistically costs around £85–£90 once labour, fuel, insurance, maintenance, and VAT are included.
If someone is offering equipment far below that:
- They may not be declaring tax
- They may not carry proper public liability insurance
- They could be cutting corners on safety, using worn equipment, skipping anchoring, or providing unsafe extension leads
These shortcuts don’t just affect the quality of the hire — they put your children and party guests at risk. At SJ’s Leisure, we do things properly so you can enjoy your event without worry.
